SKIN PREP

BASE TAN - If you are fair skinned it is best to get a base tan on Wednesday &/or Thursday before your competition tan appointment on Friday. For the base tan you can get a machine spray tan such as Versa or Sunscape at your local tanning salon. Or you can apply two applications of an over the counter self tanner to achieve a base tan. Make sure to shower and gently exfoliate before each application of your base tan. You must do the same before your competition tan appointment.

TURNING GREEN - if you have issues with turning green, not getting dark, or don’t hold your color very well, a base tan will help immensely. Plus gently exfoliating with a DIY body scrub. The DIY body scrub recipe is 1 tbsp baking soda per 4 oz fragrance-free body wash.

EXFOLIATE -  GENTLY exfoliate your skin  daily, using exfoliating gloves and a fragrance free, oil free body wash. Do not forget back, neck and armpits. Do NOT exfoliate harshly.

MOISTURIZE- moisturize your skin daily. Apply moisturizer after exfoliating and showering. Do NOT use a moisturizer the day of your competition tan appointment.

SHOWER - arrive to your competition tan appointment with clean, freshly showered skin. The shower before your first competition tan appointment will be the last shower of the weekend. This shower should be done as close to your competition tan appointment as possible. Do NOT shower with extremely hot water. Finish your shower with a  cold water rinse for as long as you can stand to close and tighten your pores. You will not shower or rinse again until after the competition.

DEODORANT - do NOT use deodorant, perfume, cologne, body spray, moisturizer or anything else on your skin prior to your competition tan appointment. Consider switching to an all natural deodorant during your contest prep to avoid the residue of toxic chemicals being absorbed and left behind in the armpit area.

LOTION OR WAXING HAIR REMOVAL - hair removal creams or waxing should be done at least one week before the competition, so the skin pores have time to close. Any regrowth can be shaved the day before the tan. If you’ve never used these methods in the past, do NOT start just before your show – do a test at least 8 weeks before your contest to check your skins reaction. Hair removal lotions can burn the skin or cause a rash. Shaving is the safest hair removal method.

SHAVING - shaving should  be done the day before your competition tan appointment to ensure the hair follicles have closed back up to avoid the speckled, black dot look. Do not shave after your first application of competition tan.

SUNBURN - avoid getting a sunburn (by sun or tanning bed) ever and definitely not with in 3 months prior to competition tan appointment. The color will not stick or absorb into peeling or newly developing skin.

HAIR - if you are doing your own hair, have it washed and dried before your competition tan appointment on Friday. If you’re having your hair done professionally, they will most likely want your hair washed and dried the day before too.

MENS NAILS - apply clear nail polish to fingernails and toenails to prevent the tan from staining your nails. Nail barrier will be applied for protection and wiped clean following the application of your tan. You can remove polish after your competition leaving nails stain free.

WOMENS NAILS  – it's totally fine to have your nails done and ready for the show prior to your competition tan appointment on Friday. Nail barrier will be applied for protection and wiped clean immediately following the application of your tan.

WAIST TRAINER - If you wear a waist trainer or a compression band during prep, you need to exfoliate and moisturize that area for at least two weeks before your competition tan appointment. When wearing a waist trainer it is better to wear a cotton tank top underneath to protect your skin. The waist trainer can leave marks on your body that might show up when you have competition tan applied.

SPORTS BRA -  if you wear a sports bra to the gym during prep, change out of it before leaving. Wearing a sweat soaked sports bra leaves chaffing on your back and the tanning product cannot adhere to those areas leaving marks and accentuating the area of the sports bra.
